Cthonn are mysterious entities occasionally glimpsed from a distance by adventurers and explorers. Cthonn are encountered almost exclusively in distant underground locales and in areas isolated from humanoid territories. No one has ever spoken with a Cthonn, but many legends surround them. Some legends claim that Cthonn were once the rulers of the world, but were cast down and cursed by the gods for their sins. Other legends suggest that the Cthonn civilization suffered a great tragedy and their grief transformed them into the bizarre creatures that they are today. Yet other legends claim that the abominable Yuan-ti were once the slaves of the Cthonn until they rose up and overthrew their masters, driving the Cthonn from the surface and binding them below the earth-bindings which have weakened over the ages, permitting the Cthonn some freedom. In any case, Cthonn sightings can be traced back into the deepest history of humanity (the elves decline to speak about them), so it appears they have always been present.
Cthonn appear to be animated, roughly formed, humanoid statues. Their faces are featureless except for deep, empty eyepits. No other features distinguish the bodies of the Cthonn and they appear to be sexless. Some Cthonn have been reported wearing cowled robes, but most are without garb or equipment of any kind.
Combat
Cthonn are not normally belligerent, generally withdrawing in the presence of intelligent creatures. However, if somehow cornered, a Cthonn will use its terrifying presence and great strength to drive off attackers. Most beasts and monsters tend to stay away from Cthonn. Cthonn have occasionally been known to carry off the bodies of the slain. Such bodies are never recovered and only a wish or miracle can return a character to life if his body has been taken by a Cthonn.
- Blindsight (Su)
- Although they appear to have no organs of sight, Cthonn are able to sense their surroundings with great acuity. The blindsight of the Cthonn has a range of 240 feet and allows them to perceive any details a normally sighted creature might. Cthonn can detect invisible creatures and can see through most types of illusions.
- Damage Reduction (Ex)
- The stony flesh of the Cthonn is highly resistant to physical damage, even from magical weapons. Cthonn have 20/+3 damage reduction.
- Elemental Resistance (Ex)
- The bodies of the Cthonn are nearly immune to extremes of heat and cold, and other forms of energy, giving them 20 points of elemental resistance.
- Eternal Repose (Sp)
- The touch of a Cthonn has the effect of a permanent gentle repose spell. Cthonn can use this ability at will as a standard action.
- Fearful Aura (Su)
- There mere presence of a Cthonn is strangely terrifying for most creatures. Cthonn continuously radiate fear in a 10-foot radius, affecting creatures as the fear spell. The DC to resist this effect is 19 (10+4+5).
- Immunities (Ex)
- Cthonn are immune to poison, gas, disease, and sleep, as well as spells which affect humanoids such as charm person due to their outsider status. In addition Cthonn are immune to critical strikes and death from massive damage.
- Nondetection (Su)
- Cthonn are under the effects of a permanent nondetection effect. The DC to overcome the nondetection is 23.
- Meld into Stone (Su)
- Cthonn can meld into stone at will with no limit to the amount of time they can reamin within the stone.
- Spell Resistance (Ex)
- Cthonn are difficult to affect with magic, having spell resistance 20.
- Stone Shape (Sp)
- Cthonn can stone shape at will, affecting up 24 cubic feet per use.
- Stonecunning (Ex)
- Their stony state has given the Cthonn great empathy with minerals and rock. Cthonn receive a +2 racial bonus on checks to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction, unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings, and the like.
- Outsider
- Cthonn are native outsiders and cannot be raised, resurrected, or reincarnated. A wish or a miracle can bring one back to life.
